Altman's masterful, ironic portrait of the British class system is a directorial tour de force for nearly 30 actors. William and Sylvie McCordle host a gathering of aristocrats of varying influence and status at their opulent country estate. Each guest is assigned a servant who circles around them like a shark, making sure that their noble master wants for nothing. The director introduces us to each couple in detail and reveals their secrets, hidden from the outside world. The plot is then radically shaken up by a mysterious murder, which sets the story in motion and rushes towards an original, shocking and unpredictable finale, as befits the great figure of world cinema, Robert Altman.
