Abel Davos (Lino Ventura) is an ageing gangster who has been sentenced to death in France and has therefore fled to Italy. With his friend Raymond (Stan Krol), he pulls off a successful robbery in Milan, making off with a large haul. However, the Italian police are hot on their heels. Abel therefore decides to secretly return to France with his wife Thérèse (Simone France) and their two children. The small group arrives by boat on a secluded beach and is surprised by two customs officers. There is a shootout in which Thérèse and Raymond are killed. Abel and the children flee and hide in Nice. Abel turns to Riton (Michel Ardan) and Fargier (Claude Cerval), two old friends from Paris, and asks them to secretly take him and the children to Paris and hide them there. However, they do not come themselves, but send the young Éric Stark (Jean-Paul Belmondo), who quickly befriends Abel. He takes Abel and the children to Paris in an ambulance and places them in safety. While Abel, with Eric's help, organises his final disappearance, he is betrayed by Riton and Fargier. Abel embarks on a murderous campaign of revenge and is eventually caught by the police.
