At first glance, Tom (Alain Delon) and Philippe (Maurice Ronet) are two young men enjoying life to the fullest on the Italian Riviera. In reality, however, there is an insurmountable difference between them: the status and power that money gives a person.

Philippe can spend lavishly, while Tom, a not very successful actor, is dependent on remaining in Philippe's favor. He has made a deal with Philippe's father to bring his prodigal son back home to America, only then will he receive his full reward. Philippe makes it clear to Tom how much he despises him and how deep the difference between them is. Tom longs not only for the life he was never given, but also for Philippe's girlfriend, which ultimately leads him to a risky plan.
