British officer Eric Lomax fell into Japanese captivity during World War II, where he experienced not only unimaginable drudgery and starvation while building a railway, but also horrific torture. The Tracks of Destiny follows his fate during the war and for many years afterwards. He meets a woman he never dreamed of, marries her and, with the help of her emotion, tries to come to terms with his experiences at the time. With the support of his wife Patti (Nicole Kidman) and best friend Finlay (Stellan Skarsgård), he sets off to Thailand to retrace his ordeal. There he discovers that his former tormentor, Officer Takashi Nagase (Hiroyuki Sakada), is still alive. His desire for revenge drives him to Japan to confront his nightmare and rid himself of it forever, whatever the cost.
