When a young girl moves from the middle of nowhere to one of the biggest cities in the world, she gets quite a shock. And that's exactly what happens to Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) in the 1950s, who is prompted to embark on such an adventure by an older sister who wants a slightly better future for her than another stint in Ireland. Eilis sets off across the ocean on a journey from the small Irish town of Enniscorthy to the Brooklyn borough of New York. In doing so, she embarks on a journey into the unknown, into an environment that initially has nothing to do with her and into a life she did not choose for herself. She finds herself in a strange world, feeling like an exile and feeling homesick for her life in her native Enniscorthy, but after she meets a handsome Italian worker, her homesickness slowly fades. Eilis comes to enjoy life in bustling New York. But then an event occurs that forces her to return to her native Ireland, where she is drawn back into her former life, and here too she meets a new love. This puts her between the two voices of her own heart and she must decide between the world she came from and the world where she can fulfil her dream.
