The blood spurting from the body of a murdered partner ends the lovemaking of a couple. Detective Nick Curran and his partner Gus are about to interrogate the victim's lover, successful author Catherine Tramell. The trained psychologist, who walks around without underwear, is toying with the entire police department. It turns out that in her last book she described the same murder in detail. Her strange love affairs with men and women are revealed. Police psychiatrist and the detective's former lover, Beth Garner, tries to unravel the psychological side of the crime for Nick.

Nick discovers strange correspondences between the subjects of Catherine's books and the people with whom the writer associates. The girl has dug up things in his past that he hoped would remain buried forever in police files - including the unfortunate shooting of innocents in a sting operation.
