Danny and Rafe have been friends since they were kids and both fell in love with planes and flying. They didn't part ways as adults, when they both became pilots in the US Army. War is already raging in Europe, but American soldiers are still spending their peacetime days at their bases. Still, Rafe, who is older, volunteers for the British RAF and goes to fight in Europe. Shortly before he leaves, he meets a nurse named Evelyn. Evelyn and her friends come to hang out with the soldiers from Rafe's unit. Rafe and Evelyn spend one last romantic evening together. At the end, Rafe confesses to Evelyn that he is going to war. Danny and his unit and a group of nurses are transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where Evelyn devotedly awaits each of Rafe's letters. One day, it is his best friend Danny who brings Evelyn the sad news. Rafe has been shot down over the sea and killed. Although he resists it, a loving bond begins to form between the two people who are hurting from the loss of their friend. Soon, Danny and Evelyn spend the night together. One day, however, Rafe appears at the door of Evelyn's infirmary, alive and well. The injured pilot has been fished out of the sea and rescued by French fishermen. Rafe immediately recognizes that Danny and Evelyn have feelings for each other. His reaction is harsh and dismissive, and the welcome party ends in a brawl. However, historical events unexpectedly enter the love triangle.
