After six shots, five dead, innocent people remain in the city. An investigation is launched and quickly finds the culprit: former army sniper James Mark Barr, who seems to be suffering from post-war trauma. Despite all the evidence against him, he will not confess. All he wants is for Jack Reacher to be contacted.

But Jack Reacher can't be contacted, he doesn't exist. He travels by bus, he doesn't use credit cards, he collects his army pension anonymously. Jack, however, spots the sniper case on TV and shows himself. But he and Barr's defense attorney Helen believe the case is not as clear-cut as it first appears.
