In 1935, despite the heatwave striking England, the Tallis family lives peacefully in their gigantic property. The youngest daughter, Briony, has decided to become a novel writer. One day as she is looking out of her room's window, she sees her older sister in the arms of Robbie, the housekeeper's son, whom she also has a crush on. Due to a series of incidents, Brioni will falsely accuse Robbie of having committed rape. As a result, the young boy is arrested and imprisoned. He is released four years later on the condition that he joins the army to participate in the battle of France during WWII. He manages to join Celia in London where she exercises as a nurse. Briony remorseful attempts to apologize but neither her sister nor Robbie is incline forgive her for her lies. Briony who became a successful writer will try to tell her story in an auto-biography she entitles "Atonement".
