The story tells of Henry Roth, a veterinarian at Sea Life Park in Hawaii meeting a young woman named Lucy Whitmore after going to a cafe following a boating incident, and introducing himself to her where they hit it off instantly and agree to meet up again the next evening. When meeting her though, Henry discovers Lucy's secret that even she didn't know about. She suffers from extensive short term memory loss due to a previous accident in her life, and cannot remember anything beyond her accident. From there Henry tries his best to connect with Lucy, having fallen in love with her, and all the mishaps along the way.
