In 1959, two high-school students fall in-love over summer break. Once school starts, Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton John) are surprised when they bump into each other at school.

Sandy is shocked when Danny acts very different than the boy she dated during the summer. Danny is in a gang called the T-birds where he has to keep his cool as the leader of the group. It seems he no longer has any feelings for Sandy.

Sandy wants desperately to be with Danny, but after he keeps blowing her off, she decides to leave him alone.

It does not take long before Danny becomes jealous of Sandy hanging around the jocks at school. He tries out at every sport, but just cannot change into a jock.

Sandy manages to make friends with the Pink Ladies—a group of girls who date the T-birds. Sandy wants to try to be a part of Danny’s world, but realizes she cannot be the type of girl Danny wants. Sandy does not give up, and with a little help from the Pink Ladies, she jumps into Danny’s world.
