On the morning of February 24, in Twin Peaks, Washington, logger Pete Martell discovers a naked body carefully wrapped in plastic on the riverbank. Sheriff Harry S. Truman, his deputies, and Dr. Will Hayward arrive and discover that the body belongs to local high school beauty Laura Palmer, considered a model of innocence and moral purity among Twin Peaks residents. The news quickly spreads among the townspeople, especially Laura's family and friends. Meanwhile, on the other side of the state line, another girl, Ronette Pulaski, is found wandering aimlessly and incongruously along the railroad tracks. Because Ronette has been found across the state line, FBI agent Dale Cooper is called in to investigate the case. Cooper's initial examination of the body reveals a small piece of paper with the letter R hidden under a fingernail. At a town meeting that same night, Cooper informs the townspeople that the style of execution of the murder matches that of a killer who murdered another young girl in Southwest Washington the previous year, and evidence suggests that this killer lives in Twin Peaks.
