At Camp Walden summer camp, courageous 11-year-old Hallie, who lives with her father in California, meets the equally elegant Annie, who lives with her mother in London. They clash in a fencing match, and when they take off their helmets after it's over, they discover that they look exactly alike. While Annie was more successful in fencing, Hallie wins a game of poker. Despite their mutual animosity, the girls start talking about their parents and are surprised to discover that they are actually twins. When they realize that neither of their parents has found a new partner since their divorce, the girls decide to bring their father and mother back together. And because each of them would like to get to know the other parent, they decide to start by switching places when they leave camp. While Hallie goes to England as Annie, her sister goes to California to visit their father. Both girls are thrilled with their newly discovered parents. But while an emotional Hallie gets to know her grandfather and mother, Annie's father introduces her to his fiancée, the conceited publisher Meredith, who is clearly only interested in Nick's fortune. When the girl finds out that the wedding is to take place in two weeks, she calls Hallie in England.
