Young and beautiful Anna is the wife of Karenin, a high-ranking tsarist official, with whom she has a son. She is a devoted wife and loving mother, living a peaceful, if somewhat boring, life. After receiving a letter from her philandering brother Oblonsky, asking her to come and help him save his marriage to Dolly, Anna leaves for Moscow. On the way, she meets Countess Vronsky, who is waiting for her son, a charismatic cavalry officer, at the station. Anna falls head over heels in love with him and becomes his mistress. Their passionate affair causes a scandal in St. Petersburg society. Karenin initially tries to maintain decorum, but he takes Anna's infidelity as a huge personal humiliation.
